Wedding Dates to Avoid in 2025

As an experienced wedding planner, one of the first things I help couples with is selecting the perfect wedding date. While any day can be magical with the right planning, there are certain dates in 2025 that might cause extra challenges. Whether it’s due to holidays, major events, or potential scheduling conflicts, here are some dates you may want to avoid—or at least approach with caution—when planning your big day.

Holiday Weekends

Holiday weekends can seem appealing at first glance because guests may have extra time off. However, they often come with inflated travel and accommodation costs, as well as potential conflicts with guests’ personal plans.

  1. Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-26)While this long weekend might seem convenient, many people use it for family vacations or getaways. Flights and hotel prices are also typically higher.

  2. Independence Day Weekend (July 4-6)Fireworks might sound romantic, but many people have traditions tied to this holiday, and it could impact your guest list.

  3. Labor Day Weekend (August 30 - September 1)Like Memorial Day, this is another popular time for travel, which could make logistics more challenging.

Major Religious or Cultural Holidays

Be mindful of holidays that may hold significance for your family or your guests. Hosting a wedding on these dates could unintentionally exclude some attendees.

  • Easter Sunday (April 20)

  • Passover (April 18-26)

  • Rosh Hashanah (October 2-4)

  • Yom Kippur (October 11-12)

Popular Event Dates

Some dates are tied to major national or local events that can disrupt travel, accommodations, or even your venue’s availability.

  1. Super Bowl Sunday (February 9)Football fans may have their eyes on the big game, not your big day. If you’re planning a February wedding, aim for a different weekend.

  2. Graduation Season (May-June)If your venue is near a college or university, be aware of local graduation dates. Hotels and event spaces can book up quickly.

  3. Thanksgiving Weekend (November 27-30)While a Thanksgiving wedding might sound cozy, many guests prefer to spend this holiday with family. Travel costs also skyrocket during this time.

Unique 2025 Dates to Consider Carefully

  1. Leap Year Day (February 29)While this date is rare and memorable, it falls on a Saturday in 2025. Be prepared for some playful “you’ll only have an anniversary every four years” comments.

  2. Halloween (October 31)A Halloween wedding can be fun and thematic, but not everyone will love the spooky vibe. Plus, kids’ trick-or-treating plans may clash.

Local Events and Peak Seasons

Always research major local events in your wedding area, such as festivals, marathons, or large conventions. These can cause road closures, hotel shortages, and other logistical headaches.

Pro Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Date

  1. Ask Your VIP Guests: Check with close family and friends to ensure your chosen date works for them. While you can’t accommodate everyone, it’s worth considering the schedules of those who matter most.

  2. Book Early: Once you’ve decided on your date, book your venue and vendors as soon as possible, especially if your wedding falls during a peak season.

  3. Be Flexible: If you’re set on a popular date, consider alternatives like a Friday or Sunday wedding to avoid competition and higher costs.

Choosing the perfect wedding date is a balancing act, but with thoughtful planning, you can make your day truly unforgettable. By avoiding these potentially tricky dates, you’ll set yourself up for a smoother planning process and a celebration to remember.
